Yes, it's true; the University of Utah Marching Band has raised more than the needed $154,000 to send all 130 members to play at the Barack Obama Presidential Inaugural Parade next Tuesday! This is an update to my last blog just this morning noting that the Utes were still a little shy of the needed funds.
Donations both large and small poured in from the community - the biggest coming from Amphastar Pharmaceuticals for $30,000. Other major contributors are Applebees and Cold Stone Ice Cream. This morning when they were still short the founder of USANA, a U of U alumni, committed the company to providing the rest of the funds.
Another huge announcement was made at Wednesday's press conference regarding philanthropist Sally Burbidge. She was a long time supporter of the Ute Band before she recently passed away. Her family is so impressed by the community efforts, that it is matching the $150,000 in band donations for student scholarships.
