Alta Ski Resort, the skiers mountain (no snowboarders here!) is a monument to Utah history.  The resort opened Jan. 15, 1939. On its opening day 350 skiers enjoyed rides for 25 cents or $1.50 for the day. Wow, skiing is a little more expensive today! The original Collins lift was the first lift in Utah and one of the first in the United States. The new Collins opened for the 2004-05 ski season and replaced the Germania and old Collins chairlifts. See photos of the new and original Collins lift. Thanks to the Deseret News for the pics.

Skiing has changed quite a bit since 1939.  Lift and equipment techology has made the sport safer, more comfortable  and more exciting at the same time.  In fact we are seeing people skiing well past their 70's due to safer equipment and seniors are more active and fit than in the past.

KUED-TV made a documentary on the 70 years at Alta and the magnetic draw it has on those of us that seek Utah's champagne powder.  Here's a clip of the "old days":

Here's another quick clip from the KUED-TV special that illusutratates the beautiful and exhilarating ride up a chairlift at Alta Ski Resort:
