So what is the Sundance Film Festival all about? Wow, there are so many descriptions and facets to the whole event...just imagine this:
45,000 people converge on a small ski town, many with lots of money, many that wish they had it; many with fame and many that wish they had it; many with a movie to sell to make it big, some to buy and discover the next big movie or star; many to see incredibly creative movies and documentaries that make never be screened in their town; many to see movie stars or hoping to see the stars; big money parties in town; many , people like me, just to watch all the above people interact.
It is an event that has brought tourist dollars to Utah that we now rely on - lodging, restaurants, catering, shopping. It brings people to this ski town that would not normally be anywhere near a ski resort. In fact for years now we have all talked about the PIB's invading town (People In Black) with black jeans, black leather jackets, black tee shirts, black sunglasses...you get the idea. In recent times you can add those will either cell phones stuck to their ears or Bluetooth headsets coming out of them.
The Sundance Institute created by Robert Redford who still is very actively involved has done a remarkable job of maintaining the true mission of the festival which is to give independent film makers an opportunity to be seen and heard. This video gives you a taste of what the first day of Sundance (which runs for 10 days) is like in Park City Utah:
