The Importance of Humility in Life and the Workplace by Jeannie Andrews, M.D., Columbus Ohio Real Estate Specialist
One of the most difficult virtues to embrace is that of Humility. In the workplace, sports arena, education system, and even within family settings, we are often faced with competition or challenges that, once conquered, can give us a sense of superiority over others. The desire to excel is a double edged sword unless one keeps the virtue of humility hand in hand with it.
Take the workplace as an example: If one expects one's employees to be humble, one must lead by example and be humble as well. Support people with resources and manpower (this does not preclude constructive criticism), and in crunch time, roll up your sleeves and help with the work load. Listen more than you speak, and actively encourage your employees to voice their ideas. Active listening is crucial to remaining humble. Then, delegate authority and responsibility to them.
I cannot say it better than Benjamin Franklin did in 1746 when he included "Humility" as one of his Thirteen Virtues:
"In reality, there is, perhaps, no one of our natural passions so hard to subdue as pride. Disguise it, struggle with it, beat it down, stifle it, mortify it as much as one pleases, it is still alive, and will every now and then peep out and show itself; you will see it, perhaps, often in this history; for, even if I could conceive that I had compleatly overcome it, I should probably be proud of my humility."
