The staff at BDS are friendly and are patient with homeowners who might not know the right questions to ask or how to go about applying for a permit if one is required.  I have visite and called BDS many times myself both for personal projects and for clients, and I have always been impressed with the professionalism and help I have received. 

Instead of not getting a permit for that next job, please consider talking to the city.  Permits are not too expensive, you will get the work inspected to make sure it is safe, and approved permits are a big plus when it comes time to sell.
