Tile in the Bedroom? Create a Wow Factor with This Design Twist

By Keith Loria

RISMEDIA, Wednesday, June 08, 2011— Having your home jump out to a buyer is as important as ever, and there are many different things that agents are recommending to their clients to give a home on the market that “wow” factor.

One popular home improvement that is causing excitement in the industry is adding ceramic tile to the bedroom, to really make the room stand out.

Of course, ceramic tile has long been the popular choice in bathroom renovations for ages, as it is durable, easy to clean, and available in a variety of colors, formats and designs.

“Tile has always made sense in the bathroom,” said Gretchen Wilson of Ashburn, Va.-based Floor & Design. “More and more we are seeing homeowners are choosing to incorporate ceramic tiles into their master bedrooms for many of the same reasons the material has been popular in bathrooms and kitchens.”

Because of this easy maintenance and durability, consumers can realize lower costs over the life of the product. Tile is more durable than other materials, lasting up to four times longer than carpet or wood, and unlike wood, it will never need refinishing, re-staining or sanding. It holds its luster better than vinyl, and requires no special chemical treatments, the way many natural stone products do.

One should choose tile that flows with the rest of your home and that makes your bedroom feel like a sanctuary.

“Natural stone tile is an option that you want to consider for your bedroom floors as well,” as noted on TheFlooringLady.com, a site with educational material on flooring choices. “There are so many different kinds and colors of stone that will go with any kind of decor that the only hard part will be choosing the kind of tile that you want for your bedroom.”

Natural stone tile flooring gives any room a more expensive feel and a spa-like look, and that’s eye-catching to a prospective buyer. Mix and match colors and be creative to create that custom look that you desire.

If you want the look of wainscoting, wood paneling or bead board, but prefer a more durable, hypoallergenic material, ceramic tile can offer the same look without the disadvantages of wood decorator touches.

“Tile is readily available in a wide range of colors, sizes, shapes and design themes,” Wilson said. “In fact, you can now find ceramic tile that even mimics the look of other popular, more costly or less durable materials like wood, glass or even metal.”

Tile manufacturers have reported several trends in ceramic tile’s use in master bedrooms, with one popular use being for the headboard. Fabric, wood or metal headboards can make a powerful design statement, and solidify a bed’s stance as the centerpiece of a room.

In master suites with large, open floor plans, using tile in the bedroom portion of the suite can help create a seamless transition between the sleeping and bathing areas. Or, it can help create cohesion between indoor and outdoor spaces as tile is one of the few interior design materials that can flow from inside to out.

It might not be the first thing you think of when renovating a bedroom, but tile can add a great look at a great price and help people want to call your home their own.
