I'm sure you all have heard about the issues with Chinese Drywall that have sprung up around the country.  This problem is only getting bigger as they learn more and more about it.  The telltales signs are pretty straightforward but not having the symptoms doesn't mean that your house doesn't have it.  We've run into many homes that have a few sheets of Chinese Drywall that are not exhibiting the symptoms that you would normally expect.  Any homes build or remodeled in 2004 to 2007 should be checked.  The fee usually costs about $75 for a qualified home inspector to do this.

What are the normal signs of Chinese Drywall?  Well, the first one is the odor.  It will smell like rotten eggs and the smell will be very prominent.  We do have many homes on wells with similar odors but when the water is not turned on, then the culprit may not be the water.  The second sign is corroded copper pipes.  The ground wire in a home is a copper wire and you can check this by removing a receptable and looking to see if the copper ground wire is black.  Another way to check is the copper wiring in your air conditioning system and to your hot water heater.

There is a new US consumer product safety website that specifically deals with Chinese drywall.  It's a really good site with detailed pictures.  The website is http://www.cpsc.gov/info/drywall/.
