Where IS Charlottesville, Virginia?
Actually, the question should be restated to ask 'what' is Charlottesville, Virginia?
What? Yes, what. Because Charlottesville, the city of 41,000, give or take a few hundred, the home of the University of Virginia, the UVA Medical Center, and State Farm Insurance, is smack dab in the middle of Albemarle County. When people refer to Charlottesville (or C'ville) they're usually talking about that area defined by the university, the Downtown Mall, and the hospitals.
But, there is a large part of the actual city limits that is still referrenced as the City of Charlottesville, but it's definitely county.
Confused yet?
When we moved here, we were.
We live in Forest Lakes South about 10 miles north of downtown C'ville. Our kids go to Albemarle County schools, we pay Albemarle County taxes, we vote for our Albemarle County representative, yet our address is Charlottesville. Our gas bill is paid to City of Charlottesville. The Albemarle Court House is in downtown Charlottesville. No rhyme nor reason.
The city limits on the west go a little past Merriweather Lewis Elementary School. To the south it includes Piedmont Valley Vo-Tech and Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. To the east, all the way out past Keswick. And to the north, past the airport up o Gilbert Station Rd.
Wow. A large area. Albemarle County itself is one of the largest counties in the state.
Just thought I'd try and clear that up. When we say "Charlottesville" it's usually understood to mean the city of. And everything else (even that huge part technically IN the large city limits) is Albemarle County.
